Glaucoma – silent thief of sight
Glaucoma is a condition that people generally refer to as the “silent thief of vision.” It ranks as the second leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world. The optic nerve, which transmits visual information to the brain, is damaged mostly through glaucoma, causing vision loss. The eyes need to maintain a proper amount of internal pressure. The eye makes a certain amount of fluid and causes it to drain out into its angle under normal intraocular pressure. Glaucoma is, therefore, the process whereby raised intraocular pressure begins to cause harm to the optic nerve, leading to permanent blindness or visual impairment. Suppose anyone knows of a family member diagnosed and being treated for glaucoma. In that case, he/she should hasten to Drishtideep Eye Institute to stamp out the condition at the early stage through evaluation.

Glaucoma Treatment Options
It is usually a step-wise approach depending on the type and severity of Glaucoma, for which a detailed eye examination is done. The availability of non-contact tonometry for measuring intraocular pressure, OCT RNFL for confirmation of optic nerve head damage, and Humphreys’ Field Analyser for determining visual field defect help the Glaucoma specialist to confirm the required treatment options. Some of these are-

Surgery for Glaucoma
Glaucoma surgery is only used in severe cases or after other medical treatments have failed. Surgery aims to create an alternative pathway for aqueous humor to normalize the eye pressure and prevent further damage to the optic nerve head. To provide a trouble-free procedure, anesthesia is crucially used during glaucoma surgery.
