Types of Cataract Surgeries
Depending on the type of Cataract, types of surgery is decided. These include-
Phacoemulsification
The surgeon makes a very small corneal incision and introduces a thin probe within the eye. This probe is passed through with ultrasound pulses. These waves break your cataract. The pieces are then removed using suction. The lens capsule is left behind to make room for the installation of an artificial lens.
Extra-capsular Cataract Extraction
This process involves making a little larger cut. Surgical instruments are put through the cut to remove the lens nucleus and cortical tissue. The prosthetic lens is fitted inside the lens capsule that is still present. Stitches may be required with this method. IOLs, or intraocular lenses, are prosthetic lenses implanted after removing the cataract.
Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Surgery
In this surgery, the surgeon removes the front capsule of the lens by making a very small cut by femto laser. However, we cannot complete cataract surgery with femto laser technology. It will assist during the first stage of the procedure, following which the Phacoemulsification machine will be used to remove the actual cataractous lens.
